Abbas is 56 years old and with 37 years of porter experience is one of the most experienced Low Porter with Mashabrum Expeditions. He has no education, but has done some religious studies. Abbas has a wife and six kids, 4 girls and 2 boys aged 25, 18, 16, 15, 14 and 12. His culture maintains that he must have at least one boy. In the off season he works on a farm and as a laborer for building houses.
When he started as a porter in 1979 very few people went up the Baltoro Valley and they had no kerosine, so they used wood for fires to cook. The loads were 30 to 45 kgs (70 to 100 lbs) plus wood and their own possession. There were no horses or mules and no proper trail back then, so the first porters to go up the Baltoro Valley each year would build cairns with rocks to show the way to other.
