Haji Hadi Ali

747354a8-0f87-4abb-b907-50de166bccafHaji Hadi Ali is one of our nine Porter Chiefs. Each Porter Chief overseas about 30 to 40 porters, which operate and are managed as a group with certain responsibilities.

Hadi is 58 years old and lives in Shagar, Baltistan which has about 25,000 people over 18 years old. He is married with 5 children which are 2 girls and 3 boys aged 16, 15, 14, 12 and 6.

Hadi started working in the Baltoro Valley when he was 20 years old. He was a Low Porter for 8 years and then was promoted to a Porter Chief for the last 30 years. His responsibilities are to manage the Low Porters loads, to distribute their food rations and ensure their performance and safety.

Hadi works in the Baltoro Valley as Porter Chief during June, July and August. During this three months Hadi must earn enough income to support his entire family for the whole year as he has no other cash income. Hadi has a small plot of land where his family can grow some grass for one buffalo and two cows, grow some wheat to make chapatti (unleavened flat bread) and roti (raised flat bread) and potatoes, onions and some tomatoes. His family uses the buffalo for plowing his fields and two cows for milk and butter.
